About Tamahka Trails

Tamahka The Tunica-Biloxi Tribal word for Alligator.

Tamahka (Alligator) Trails was appropriately named not only for the indigenous creature often seen at the golf course, but also for its untamed and treacherous nature.  Like the animal, the golf course can seem docile at times, but wayward shots can quickly fall prey to one of the many dangers incorporated into this entertaining yet deceptive layout.

Tamahka Trails Golf Club meanders through a beautiful 230 acre tract of rolling terrain, which is very unique to central and south Louisiana.  The golf course features winding creeks, majestic century-old trees along with native wildlife providing a sense of seclusion and harmony with nature.  The course was designed by award-winning architect, Steve Smyers, who thoughtfully incorporated the natural features of this picturesque landscape in creating one of the premier golf courses in Louisiana.  This 18 hole, par 71 championship layout will challenge scratch golfers from the back tees, while providing an enjoyable and memorable experience for higher handicappers by offering 5 sets of tees (ranging from 7,130 yards to 4,251).

Not Your Ordinary "Resort" Course

As implied above, Tamahka Trails is not your run-of-the-mill resort course.  To many, resort courses are visually appealing, fairly short in length, wide fairways with very little trouble lurking and receptive greens...a virtual stroll in the park.  While Tamahka Trails embodies some of these virtues, it (through purposeful design) requires golfers to think their way around the course if they want to avoid the "alligator's" bite and post a good round.  The sentiments of many who have experienced Tamahka Trails are that Mr. Smyers crafted 18 holes of pure golf perfection.

As a testament to the uniqueness and quality of design, Tamahka Trails was selected to be a three time host site for U.S. Open qualifying and a charter member club of the Audubon Golf Trail.  Tamahka Trails has also been selected to host multiple championships for the Louisiana Golf Association along with hosting thousands of corporate and charity tournament participants each year.  Golfers travel from throughout the region to experience Tamahka Trails.

First Time Golfers at Tamahka - What you need to know!

Below are tips on how to get the most out of your round at Tamahka Trails

  1. Refer to our Yardage Book - see Course Map and Hole by Hole page on this website or download here. You can also request one upon check-in.  There are a number of blind tee shots and dog leg holes.  Having the right yardages is crucial in determining your approach to the hole and avoid danger.
  2. Select the Right Tees - There is a grid on the scorecard that takes into account handicap and average drive distance in helping you select the appropriate tees.  Remember that the course is par 71.  If you are looking at distance alone, add 200 yards to be equivalent to a par 72 course.  Also, there are a number of uphill tee shots, making the hole play much longer. When in doubt, move up a set of tees.  You can always move back if you are making too many birdies.
  3. Avoid the Bunkers and Native Areas - The course features 75 strategically placed bunkers, which have been completely renovated.  The golf course also features native areas throughout the property.  These tall fescue grasses are beautiful and provide a visual separation between the holes.  Balls hit into these areas are often lost, but played as a lateral hazard under local rules.  The penalty strokes will add up quickly if you play too aggressively or start spraying the ball left and right.
  4. Don't Let up on the Shorter Holes -  Golf course architects often add subtle features to the shorter holes making them an interesting challenge.  The greens often have more slope to them and keeping the ball below the hole is imperative.  Tamahka Trails features 5 holes (#5, #7, #10, #12 & #17) that the green runs away from the golfer.  On these holes, it is always a good idea to be a little past the hole in order to have an uphill putt for your birdie or par.
  5. Watch the Grain - Tamahka Trails features Champion Bermuda greens that show a distinct grain pattern.  The agronomy team incorporates routine verticutting, which helps control the grain, but does not eliminate it.  This type of grass displays a grain pattern that grows down the fall line (downhill) and also favors the setting sun (west).  When looking at the green, you can often see sections of the green that are shiny and other areas that look dull.  Shiny indicates down grain and dull reflects looking into the grain.  Putts will roll much quicker down grain than into the grain.  The Golf Course Superintendent tries to maintain green speeds around 10.5 - 11 on the stemp meter, however, when facing a putt downhill and down grain, it could increase to 15+.
